We're all we've got sometimes
Who: Lani, Sha, Daniel, maybe Nanas
When: A week after the group goes to WW.
What: Family comes to town.
He knew Beryl. She was a strong girl, stronger than many, oddly alpha in a human body, and still oddly, humanly, vulnerable. She'd been so happy in recent emails and phonecalls. She was dating someone, and yeah it was a little awkward to learn how to be good for someone but she was taking it in stride and then...
...nothing.
She'd had her heart broken before, it was one reason he'd been so happy to hear her crawling back out of her protective shell. Three and a half years with someone in college who'd just been grooming her to add to a pack. Not because he loved her, no, just an elaborate, slow hunt to see if he could create an alpha that'd obey him and take out the leader of the local pack. Slimy ass bastard that only revealed his true colors when his ex-packmates had looked in on her, worried.
Lone wolves man. Kicked out for a reason in many cases. This one being narcissistic psychopathy paired with a tendency towards conning others.
Lani had pissed on his grave when he went to visit her yes, and he still didn't know the whole story, or who had put the bastard down.
He was really hoping he wasn't going to show up to a Beryl he wasn't going to talk for a month and throw herself into competitions again.
Or a corpse.
Sure, he wouldn't blame her if she did decide to start turning fuzzy, they'd talked about it when they were younger of course, how not when they'd been so damn alone together? But anyone that tried to force his cousin was going to get a very unwelcome reaction!
He really was bracing for the worst when he let himself into her apartment, she'd given him a copy of the key when she got it, just like he'd sent her a copy of his, but it was oddly...empty.
"Hmmm, hasn't been anyone in recently," Sha noted, leaning around his side to sniff the slight dusty scent. "Minus this guy! Hello kitty!" she grinned.
The grey fuzzball was glaring at them from the top of Beryl's freestand bag, the iron cross girder not at all wide enough so the silly thing looks like some strange fungus eating the post yes. "Meh!"
"Looney!" Lani smiled, "hey boy. Autofeeder huh?" He held his arms up and the old beast stood, stretched, then deigned to pad down that arm to drape himself across the boy's shoulders. "Looney meet Sha, Sha, Looney. He's a crotchety old cuss, you'll like him!" That said though he was going to go check that feeder. It could usually feed out for a month but best to check it anyway. The codger knew how to turn taps on and off so he wasn't worried about water...
"Hey Looney!" Sha grinned, reaching up to fuzzle the guy as was his due, eliciting the rather common sniff, blink, and DEEPER sniff from the poor feline. "So...."
"So we're crashing here for now," Lani admitted. "Guest room for us, I promise it's got a nice bed, we always prepare in case one or the other of us needs to move out fast!"
"Yeah, your fugitive bedroom," she grinned easily, having gotten that explanation when she'd moved her stuff in with Lani in MI!
"Hey, I never broke the law I promise!" He laughed, swatting at her as she dodged and wove toward the hall to dump their bags.
"Yet!"
"Ouch!" he laughed, checking the feeder and the kibble in it, hmmm. "About a week past, she tops it off start of each month you know?"
"Okay, so, we start asking around the various shifters? What is it with your cousin and wanting to be near shifters?" she asked cheerfully. "We're amazing, obviously, but lower states here are kinda crazy about how they treat us..."
"Yeah," he agreed softly. "I don't know. She...needs to belong. Strong and confident as she is, she still needs that I think? And it's what we know. Hell, her formative years and mine were both spent finding a healthy shifter community for me." He regretted that....often.
Not taking her away from their shitty home but...taking her INTO the life as it were.
Yeah, that thought spiral had Sha coming back down the hall to poke his chest, hard, "stop that. She's going to make her own choices, some people were never meant to be normal, okay? Not your fault. Not her fault. Stop smelling like that."
"Heh..." he sighed, running a hand over his face and wincing as Looney went from his shoulders to the counter to beg for wet food. "Pushy woman."
"Damn straight!"
He bent to kiss her then sighed, "we check her shop first. Then we start in on the shifters. Vamps come nightfall."
"Been a while since I bit a vamp," Sha mused thoughtfully.
"Please don't! This strain will proooobably like it then I'll feel inadequate!"
"Bah, you're my favorite bite sized guy don't worry," she assured, nipping his shirt in amusement.
Bite sized. Bah. "Tease," he chuckled, ruffling her hair because it annoyed her when he did! "Let's go."
The drive to the shop his sister managed was actually...pleasant, and oddly the shop itself seemed really nice and welcoming for a vamp property. Go figure.
"Can I help you?" a young spoke from behind the desk.
"Hi, my name is Thulani, I'm looking for my cousin Beryl." May as well be direct?
"And I'm his emotional support Alaskan!" Sha piped up cheerfully as she peered at shelves and casually ignored the men she could see outside. Shifters watching the shop for some reason? Hmmm.
"My boss isn't available, I can take a message though!" Daniel smiled.
Boss huh? Lani smiled a touch sharply then shook his head, "no. She hasn't been home in a week, maybe longer. Have you filed with missing persons?"
Daniel blinked? "I'm sorry I'm not at liberty..."
"Ah shush! You are scaring the boy!" Nana Pendu chuckled. "He is new. Beryl is a good woman, with a good young man they will make wonderful babies. She has gone to aid the shop owner Khemrys in her homeland. It was something of an emergency I believe, all the young men who worry about her and her shop have been worried, as have the other owner, Requiem's, friends at their circus."
...what?
He blinked, turning carefully to the woman he had thought was a customer yes, "explain. Please."
"So worried," Nana Pendu chuckled, "You are a good cousin yes. Have some tea. She is in good company and will return in time, but as long as you feel the gods in this shop they are safe."
"It does smell...safe," Sha offered. Weirdly so. And warm.
"Exactly," the small Indian woman smiled.
"I..." Lani blinked.
"Still wish to speak with others of course yes yes," Nana Pendu chuckled. "Of course you will, you are a young man, you always ask the same questiosn to everyone!"
